Week 3

Week 3 was probably the least enjoyable thus far.

This week I decided to finish up a book I started in passing. New Years Day while waiting for my friend to get out of the shower and get ready I picked up "Why Men Love Bitches" off the book shelf. I feel like this is one of those books that was really popular there for a while and has lost a lot of the momentum.

I have a lot of thoughts about this book. Similarly to "He's Just Not That into You" I do think that at some point in her life every woman needs to hear what both of these books have to say. Sometimes you just need some tough love. I will say though that not read at the right time it will lead to a lot of scoffs and incredulous looks. I often found myself re-reading the page just to make sure I understood what Argov was telling women to do. I think that the overall messages of both of these books is that you should ultimately respect yourself and only put up with someone else who respects you as well that advice is a little extreme. Also, WMLB is not exactly a great read for any woman who understands the current constraints of the economy or who cares even remotely about not being bound to traditional gender roles. I would also recommend only reading the first 70 pages or so because the later half of the book is just a lot of repetition. Trying to read this before bed became very confusing because I always thought I had accidently started re-reading older pages only to find out that I was on the right page, it was just the same message over and over.

52 changes has been much less painful.
1. Hydrate
2. Sleep more
3. Get more active

check, check, and check. I have been getting up earlier in order to do yoga. I actually really like it because it gives me time in the morning to make my bed, get my life together, and get dinner in the crock pot a lot of times without being stressed.

Week 2

Firstly, let me make note that I am writing this from my iPad so it is going to be short and sweet with no pictures as of yet.

Last week I read a very insightful book called "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years" by Don Miller. I have read two of his books before and hie has a truest unique very of spirituality and the world. Not to dissuade anyone from his books for their spiritual undertones but his first book "Blue like Jazz" is a non-religious very on Christianity. This week's book though is about making and living a better story. The basic premix is that don is approached by a company wanting to make one of his books into a film and during this process Don learns all about the makings of a good story. Don decided that the real him is ot living a god story and sets out to do just that. I would highly recommend any of Don's books. While there is always parts that lag overall I think he does great work and if nothing else it is always thought provoking.

In terms of 52 small changes, the challenge this past week was to sleep. Check!i almost always get 7 hours of sleep. No problems there.

Sorry it was so short. Get ready for this week's book. I will have a lot to say about it.

Starting my last grad semester

Today is the last day before the semester starts. I think it is going to be good. Two classes tomorrow so I guess I'll get a good feeling for the way the semester is going to play out.

I neglected to mention that as part of my goal to read 52 books in a year (other than school books) I have sort of already picked out the last book. I'm reading 52 Small Changes. So I'll be reading and hopefully making a change a week. This week's challenge was to hydrate, drink more water. I am pretty sure I drink all the water that my body can actually handle so I'm going to consider that completed. The bonus for this week was to filter you water Once again, winning! We already do that in the apartment so this week I got off pretty easy. Double Win!

So I've already picked out my book for week two but you will have to wa until I finish it to find out all about it.

Thus far...

52 in 52

So, let's not talk about how long it has been since I wrote a post. We'll just agree to forget that.

Some of the first years in the program decided to read 52 books in 52 weeks this year. I thought this sounded like a grand idea. I think I can do this while finishing up my last semester in grad school. Here goes nothing...

Week 1:

I am almost done with it. I also read Wishful Drinking by Carrie as well. In the first I learned a lot about Fisher and her life. I never knew that her family was all equally famous. In this book though she explores some of the darker parts of her life, of which there are many. She talks about her relationship with her step-mother, Elizabeth Taylor, and her strange friendship with Michael Jackson. Overall a good quick read. I would suggest reading Wishful Drinking first, it gives a good background of her life rather than jumping straight into the shock treatment and drug and alcohol addictions.
